California
and Hawaiian diverse population:
In the mid-1960s, California became the most populous state. Hispanics now populate almost half of Los Angeles County, while 30% of San Francisco’s population is Chinese. In Fremont, along the southeastern bay, nearly 40% of the residents are Asian American. In Northern California, 14 counties were more than 80% white, while 4 Southern California counties were less than 44% white. Just like California, Hawaii's population is also one of the most diverse in the world. Diversity grew during the sugarcane era when there was a need for laborers, who were imported from China, Japan, the Philippines, and Portugal. In 2010, the largest ethnic group was Asian with about 38.6%, Whites with 24.7%, Native Hawaiians with 10%, and Hispanics with 8.9%, while blacks were 1.6% of the total population.
